Begode T4 Max Electric Unicycle

Following in the footsteps of the original T4 from Begode, the first 16" suspension wheel on the market, the T4 Max is the latest iteration on the T4 platform. While not a complete overhaul, the T4 Max does come with added features of newer Begode wheels, including the latest controller, coil shock, and motor technology.

  • Motor Upgrade: The T4 Max uses Begode's latest tile motor design, which utilizes curved magnets on the rim to better align with the magnetic field produced by the stator. This leads to a smoother ride feel, as riders with other tile-motor wheels like the ET Max have reported.
  • Battery Improvements: 50S cells come standard on the T4 Max, which retain the capacity of the standard 50E cells, while being capable of higher continuous current output, similar to the 40T cells that came with our T4's, which compromised on range compared to the 50E cells in exchange for that extra performance boost. 50S cells allow for the best of both worlds.
  • Durable Construction: The T4 Max retains the compact, yet rugged metal frame construction from the T4 Pro, using improved stainless screws/bolts. The improved wider and stronger rim construction from the T4 Pro is also present on the T4 Max.

  • Suspension upgrades: Begode's newest DS200 coil shock is preinstalled on the T4 Max, for better handling off-road and adjustable preload, compression, and rebound for dialing in the right settings for your riding style and terrain. The S-linkages are also installed, which allow you to select between two shock mounting positions to vary the supporting force by ~20% to better suit your riding weight.

  • Knobby Tire: The T4 Max was designed with off-roading in mind, and as such it comes with the popular J-802 knobby tire, which has an offset knob tread pattern for better turning characteristics.
  • Standard equipment: similar to the T4/Pro, the Max comes with the mud-guard, set of Powerpads, die-cast spiked pedals, integrated seat & faster 5A charger. The kickstand is also installed from the factory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of the T4 Max over the T4 & T4 Pro?The T4 Max includes several upgrades, including a more powerful controller that runs cooler and allows for field weakening (higher top speeds), an upgraded tile motor to match the controller that runs smoother for a superior ride feel, 50S cells for higher continuous discharge capabilities which translates to more available power and higher sustained top speeds, and the DS200 coil shock system. Coil shocks are preferred by some riders for off-road use, since they give a more predictable response when going over obstacles or rough terrain, and the DS200 shock with the included S-linkage system allows for variable preload, compression, rebound, and shock mounting position, the last of which allows you to change the shock's supporting force to better suit your riding weight.

When will the T4 Max be shipping out to customers? The T4 max is already in production, and if all goes according to plan, we should be able to ship these out by the end of 2024. Pre-orders are available now if you'd like to reserve one of these units for yourself.

Does the handle kit come included with the T4 Max?No, but it can be purchased separately.

What charger is included in the box? How fast can the T4 Max be charged?A 100.8V 5A 110/220V auto-switching charger is included, which can charge the wheel in about 4 hours. While the cells are capable of very fast charging, the limiting factors are the charge board and BMS, meaning that in practice, 10-12A is the limit.

Will there be other tires offered?
Currently, Begode is only offering the T4 max with the knobby tire, but the installed J-802 tire handles well on the street due to its tread pattern, and knobby tires are anecdotally more stable at speed. Plus, this provides better handling on poor-quality roads. Other 16x3" tires are compatible if you'd like to install one yourself, though, with plenty of clearance between the frame and the motor.

How water-resistant is the T4 Max?Water resistance will be similar to the T4/Pro, which is relatively good, but the same general rule for all EUCs also applies here: light rain and small puddles are alright, but moderate to heavy rain should be avoided wherever possible, as should larger bodies of water. Even if the controller was completely waterproof, the bearings are still susceptible to water damage if exposed frequently or heavily, especially in a saline environment, despite the bearing seals.

Upgraded Samsung High-Power 50S Battery Pack

The most valuable component of any Wheel is its battery pack, the beating pulse of the machine. Over the years it has been found, from painful experience, that pairing a high-powered machine with a battery cell that is not designed for high peak-power applications can result in latent/delayed catastrophic thermal runaway events. To try to minimize this risk, we at eWheels, have insisted the use of high-powered battery cells, particularly on smaller 4 parallel packs, such as the MTen4, A2, T4, S18, Hero, S22, & Master—as the number of parallels increase, the load on each cells decreases accordingly. Until recently, there was the trade-off between power & capacity; now, with the advent of the new Samsung 50S cell, one can have both!

  • Energy Density: 50S has a 20% increase in energy density over the 40T, providing a corresponding increase in range without any weight/bulk penalty.
  • Higher Operating Temperatures: the specifications of the 50S has a vast operating range, from -20 to 80°C/-4 to 176°F vs -20-60°C/-4-140°F with the commonly used 50E/GB cell & as high as 100°C/212°F in Samsung’s test data! This massive margin not only allows the 50S to output up to 3x more power than the 50E, but perhaps more importantly, will greatly improve battery pack safety, there is no conceivable scenario in which these limits will ever be reached, or exceeded.
  • Power Output: the maximum sustained power output on the 50s is 45A vs 15A on the 50E. From a Rider’s perspective, the main benefit of having this power on-tap is once the pack(s) have been partially depleted, reducing the risk of cut-outs when power is required.
  • Rapid-charging: another benefit of the 50s over the 50E is charging rates, 2.25x higher, 6A vs 2.5A. It should be noted that although the cell supports the higher charging current, there may be other factors that limit maximum charge rate, such as the charge-port, wiring & BMS components. On the Lynx, the maximum rate of charge should not exceed 16A.
  • Superior Cycle-life: perhaps the most common misconception of high-power cells is that of reduced cycle-life, but this is fundamentally a misunderstanding of the published datasheet for battery cells. In these publications, Samsung’s data is based on exceedingly high sustained loads of 25A/45A. Other Samsung materials demonstrates that in 10A continuous load scenario, the 50S commands a slight lead over the the 50E for longevity, with >82% capacity retention over 600 cycles.
It should also be noted that these synthetic tests in no way represent the power demand pattern that is experienced when using your machine, where the average load, on flat terrain, will be closer to 2-3A/cell vs the 10A in the test data—there may be periods where this demand is considerably more than the 10A, which is where the high-power cells really come into their element. In addition, the [50S] 600 cycles were charged at the maximum 6A vs a typical 1.5A (per parallel) with the stock charger, which also has an impact on the pack’s longevity.

In summary, the 50S battery cell is objectively superior in every measurable metric, with only a marginal increase in upfront cost. It is expected that machines fitted with these packs will retain their value better than other battery cells.
